A Petite Orchid Posy with a Long Outline

Floral Design Spotlight · Passionflower Sue

Small can still have a strong silhouette. This petite bouquet from Passionflower Sue uses pale orchid faces and a descending line to make a delicate handheld piece.

Look at the proportion to the hand

The bouquet occupies a small area beside the waist. That restrained scale lets the individual orchid shapes remain visible instead of turning them into one broad patch of color.

Let the flowers taper

The top is fuller, while smaller details continue below the hand. The narrowing outline gives the little bouquet movement and makes the bottom feel like a finish rather than an abrupt cutoff.

Keep the background simple

The pale dress provides a quiet setting for the lavender flowers. Subtle color differences and darker flower centers become the details we notice, rather than extra ribbon or a patterned wrapper.

Try the idea in your own style

Sketch a tiny handheld bouquet using only a few flower shapes. Make the upper portion wider and reduce the shapes toward the bottom. Check whether the silhouette remains clear when your drawing is viewed small.
