Coral Reds and Dark Centers in a Pale Vase
Floral Design Spotlight · Swallows & Damsons
Red can feel lively rather than heavy when there’s a little space around it. This Swallows & Damsons arrangement brings coral flower heads and dark circular centers into a loose, branching shape.

Let the dark circles punctuate the color
Several almost-black centers sit among the brighter coral and red flowers. Their repeated round shapes give the eye a few clear stopping places within the more varied petals.
Leave a dip in the upper outline
Taller stems rise at the sides with a lower opening between them. That uneven outline makes the arrangement feel more open than an equally full dome would.
Give the vase a quieter color
The pale vessel stands apart from the red and dark flowers. Its light surface provides a visible base without adding a second strong accent color to the composition.
Try the idea in your own style
Sketch the outline of this arrangement as two rises with a dip between them. Try a second sketch with an even rounded top. Which feels more open? Use that comparison to plan a small vase arrangement with flowers you already know, rather than trying to copy the original recipe.
