Nasturtiums with Wandering Stems in a Small Glass Bottle

Floral Design Spotlight · Lucy Hunter

A small bottle leaves plenty of room for these nasturtiums to wander. Lucy Hunter lets their curling stems, round leaves and softly striped flowers make a generous outline from a modest container.

Follow the stems before the flowers

Several stems bend sideways or curl back toward the bottle. Those curves are visible between the flowers, giving the arrangement movement that would disappear if every stem were hidden in a dense bunch.

Keep the small vessel in proportion

The bottle occupies only a narrow part of the whole outline. Flowers spread above and beyond it, so the arrangement feels expansive while the visible water and stems keep its base simple.

Enjoy color within each flower

Muted yellow, peach and burgundy appear inside individual flower faces. That built-in variation provides detail without needing many unrelated flower types, and the plain background gives those small markings space to be seen.

Try the idea in your own style

Try a few suitable flower stems in a small clean vase. Look for naturally curved stems and let them point in different directions. Stop while you can still follow the individual lines back toward the vessel.
