Sunflowers, Curving Stems and a Warm Weathered Vessel
Floral Design Spotlight · Swallows & Damsons
Sunflowers don’t have to sit in a neat, even row. In this Swallows & Damsons design, warm flower faces appear at different heights around a dark, weathered vessel.

Let the tallest stem start a conversation
A dark red sunflower rises above the main arrangement on a curved line. Smaller flowers and fine stems nearby keep that tall point connected to the fuller grouping below.
Mix the directions of the flower faces
Some sunflowers look forward while others angle down or turn away. Those changes reveal different shapes and keep the repeated flower type from feeling too uniform.
Give the container a role in the colors
The vessel’s rust-brown surface echoes the deeper petals and warm background. Pale flowers and small white details interrupt the darker areas so the arrangement still has places that feel light.
Try the idea in your own style
With a stable vase and familiar flowers, compare a version with all the faces pointing forward to one with a few gently angled outward. Keep the stem count the same. Photograph both and notice which arrangement gives your eye a more interesting path.
