Dahlia tubers shouldn't disappear from your attention once they're packed away. A brief winter inspection gives you a chance to notice changes before spring. The goal is to understand the conditions in storage, not to keep unpacking or handling every clump unnecessarily.

Check the storage space

Record the temperature where the tubers actually sit, rather than relying on the room's name. A garage may experience freezing conditions even when it felt mild on packing day. American Dahlia Society guidance emphasizes cool, frost-free storage and a balance of moisture. Conditions that suit one storage medium may not suit another, so avoid changing several things at once.

Look for a pattern

Inspect a few representative clumps and check any that look different. Note softness, visible decay, unusual dampness, or pronounced shriveling. Those observations don't establish a particular disease. Keep questionable material separate while you seek reliable advice, and don't move dirty tools between clumps. If several containers show the same change, investigate the storage environment as well as the individual tubers.

Keep labels with the plants

Check that names remain legible and attached to the correct clumps. If a label is missing, mark the identity as unknown. Keep a simple record with the inspection date, condition, and any adjustment you make. That way, your next check can reveal whether the change helped rather than leaving you to rely on memory.

If a clump appears diseased or you're unsure whether to keep it, ask Extension or a knowledgeable dahlia grower. A photo of a healthy flower cannot diagnose what's happening to its stored tubers.
