Choosing a vase is easier when you start with the bouquet in front of you. Look at the length of the stems, the size of the flower heads, and how tightly the bunch sits together. A useful vase supports the arrangement, holds enough water, and lets you enjoy the flowers without forcing them into place.
Try the opening before trimming
Hold the bouquet above the vase and lower the stems gently into the opening. If the flowers bunch into a solid dome, the neck may be too narrow for the look you want. If the stems slide apart and the flowers disappear over the rim, try a narrower opening or a smaller bunch. Put an unfamiliar vase on a towel while you test it, and check that it stands securely.
Match the shape to the job
A straight-sided cylinder gives you a simple starting point for a hand-tied bouquet. A rounded vase with a narrower neck can help gather a loose collection of stems. Several small bud vases are useful when your flowers have very different lengths. These are design options rather than rules: the right choice depends on the stems you actually have.
Cut gradually and check the water
Hold the flowers beside the vase before cutting anything. Trim a little at a time with clean tools, then check the overall shape again. Make sure the cut ends reach water and lower leaves stay above the waterline. Avoid relying on a very shallow decorative bowl unless you have suitable support and a way to keep the stems hydrated.
A quick vase test
- Does it stand firmly when filled?
- Can you clean the inside properly?
- Do the stems reach water without being crushed?
- Can you see the flower shapes clearly?
- Does the arrangement fit the place where it will live?
Before buying another vase, try the same bouquet in two vessels you already own. Take a photo of each. Comparing them side by side is a simple way to see how much the opening changes the design.
